ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAM

The annual physical examination is the most important part of your pet's visit to the veterinarian. The examination performed by Dr. Ephraim or Dr. Vitale helps in early detection and/or prevention of disease processes and ensures the best possible health care for your pet.

The next time you are in for your pet's annual vaccinations, be assured that he/she will be checked out from nose to tail. Wellness Blood Testing provides information on how the "insides" are working, so be sure to ask about it!

Did you Know?

VIDEO VETSCOPE

Oakton Animal Hospital has something wonderful (and sometimes not so wonderful) to show you!

Have you ever wondered exactly what your pet's doctor sees when looking in Fluffy's ear? Now you can. Our digital otoscope lets you see exactly what the Doctor sees at exactly the same time.

We are able to go even a step further with this state-of-the-art medical diagnostic tool. In addition to seeing how the ears look during an examination, our digital otoscope takes our surgical capabilities to another level. We are able to skillfully clean out impacted ear wax from the ear canal while under sedation. The otoscope also assists us in relieving the pressure of an inner ear infection as well as cleaning out the infectious material formed in the ear. This gives your pet immediate relief from pain.

We invite you to come take a look with us!

Leptospirosis In Dogs!

Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonosis (meaning people can be infected). According to the Centers for Disease Control, there have been recent outbreaks of this disease in Illinois and Florida.

The bacteria, Leptospira, proliferate in fresh water, damp soil, and mud. This bacteria can enter the body through cut or abraded skin, mucous membranes, conjunctivae and ingesting contaminated water.

This disease can be found in wildlife (deer, raccoons, opossums, skunks, rats and other rodents).

Dogs can get this disease and now we have an improved vaccine to protect your dog from this potentially deadly disease. The best person to diagnose and treat Leptospirosis is your veterinarian. If your dog shows Flu-like symptoms, please call for an appointment. We are currently offering this vaccination for $9.50.

HEARTWORMS IN CATS
What you need to know…

Although heartworm disease in dogs has been well know for decades, recent advances in research have helped us understand this serious disease in cats:

" Heartworms are carried by mosquitoes. If an infected mosquito bites your cat, heartworms enter the blood stream and travel to the lungs and heart where they can cause permanent damage.

" Even indoor cats can get heartworm disease. In fact, a recent study found that 55% of cats that tested positive for heartworms lived strictly indoors or mostly indoors.

" Heartworm disease can cause sudden death in cats. Although many cats show
no symptoms at all, heartworm disease
can cause your cat to experience vomiting coughing, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite and even sudden death.

" The best course of action is prevention. Treatment of heartworm disease in cats can be dangerous and even fatal. FDA approval of a heartworm protection for cats now gives you the ability to protect your cat from this disease.
